Health EducationElementary HealthThe elementary health education program draws on the Michigan Model for Health curriculum. It is a comprehensive program that addresses the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) for health education. At each grade level, in age-appropriate lessons, the program addresses the following areas:
Families are kept informed about the content being addressed through family handouts and letters that students take home. Fourth and fifth grade teachers have additional training to teach lessons on HIV and AIDS. Fifth grade teachers are trained and certified to teach lessons on puberty in a unit called I Wonder What is Happening to Me. The health material used in the district is examined and approved by the Ann Arbor Public Schools Sexual Health Education Advisory Committee, which includes members of the school district and members of the broader Ann Arbor health and clergy communities.
