U Conn has something but it isn't like the WPI summer program. WPI is longer and very expensive. Penn State has one but just for minority kids.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the Short-Term Education Program for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The STEP-UP Program is designed to provide short-term research education for high school and/or undergraduate students from racial and ethnic minority or disadvantaged backgrounds to expose them to research within the mission area of NIDDK. The Program exposes students to research in areas of diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. The Program provides support for eight to ten consecutive weeks of full-time basic or clinical research education and training during the summer provided by experienced faculty currently active in research related to the mission of NIDDK. Additional research areas are considered depending upon the availability of appropriate mentors at the student’s selected institution. High school students who have completed the tenth grade are eligible to participate. http://stepup.niddk.nih.gov for complete details. Students may apply online at the STEP-UP website. Working at the Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop is great to do in summer - this is when they need the most help and you can make money towards school events and for the Village Fund. It averages $8 per hour that you can put towards any school related trip or fundraising activity. You can even make a sign-in page for yourself that is "to be announced" - in other words you can save money towards that big latin club trip, forum trip, or band trip that hasn't even been planned yet! Go in to the shop to sign up for hours any time. It's fun work, in 2 hour shifts, available 7 days a week - and you get a preview of all the cool thrift shop deals. Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop, 2280 S. Industrial Highway, 996-9155. Tanya (CHS PTO Thrift shop coordinator)
Other Suggestions
Volunteers are sought at the Hands-On Museum, local nursing homes/retirement centers and at the Peace Neighborhood Center. Students volunteer for organizations like the Shelter of Ann Arbor, the St. Andrews Breakfast Program and Food Gatherers. Teaching and child care opportunities exist at churches and synagogues.
Other summer activites? Help out an elderly neighbor with lawn care, babysit, or even help mom and dad with home jobs! Rotary Youth Exchange Programs
Rotary Youth Exchange. Rotary Youth Exchange involves both school year and short term (2-4wk+) exchanges in foreign countries. High school students between the ages of 15 and 19 are eligible for Rotary Youth Exchange. As the oldest exchange program of its kind, Rotary Youth Exchange takes pride in choosing students who are academically above average, articulate, and demonstrate leadership in their communities. Ideal candidates should also possess qualities — like flexibility and a willingness to try new things — that will enable them to become excellent cultural ambassadors. You do not have to be involved with Rotary in any way in order to apply, although children of Rotarians are more than welcome to participate.

VFP promotes International Voluntary Service as an effective means of intercultural education and community service. Live in a foreign country for 2-3 weeks for as little as $200. The registration fee is used in part to help cover the costs of hosting and insuring foreign volunteers in the US. Likewise foreign volunteers pay a registration fee to their local organizations. VFP then works with its partner organizations and exchanges volunteers like you. Camp costs in all countries are low because housing is simple and often donated and the volunteers prepare their own meals. VFP also strives to keep administrative costs low.
