Freshmen CoursesTo create a schedule, you can browse our list of departments or build a schedule online Required Classes*: Required in 9th grade **: Should be taken before end of 10th grade English Language Arts: Introduction to Literature* introduces students to the critical study of a variety of texts: novels, short stories, plays, poems, and essays. Students review the elements of plot, theme, characterization, point of view, etc. They write both analytical and creative papers. Social Studies: Civics** studies the historical foundations of the U.S.government, including state and local government. There is emphasis on the Constitution, the American economy, and the U.S. in world affairs. Law** studies criminal and civil law and a broad spectrum of topics within the law: crime and society, law enforcement, types of crimes, the criminal justice system. Case studies, simulations, and field trips are a part of the course. Recommended ClassesFoundations of Science, a 3-year high school science curriculum which replaces the traditional earth science, biology and chemistry course sequence with a project-based curriculum integrating these subjects over the three years. Computer technology is woven throughout the curriculum allowing the daily use of technology. Project supported by the University of Michigan School of Education/HiCE Labs. Physical Education: Fundamentals of Fitness fulfills graduation requirement and involves instruction and planning, implementing and evaluating an individualized fitness program. Aerobic or Dance Fitness also fulfills requirements and includes cardiovascular training, strength, endurance and improvement in flexibility. Art: Open Studio encourages concentration on independent projects, Drawing & Painting emphasizes drawing and painting in a variety of media, Junk to Art uses found objects and recycles them into objects of art. |
